Happy New Year!

Time has come to say goodbye to the year of 2014, to make a summary and turn the pages of a new chapter in our life. The pages there are still blank and empty but the headline "2015" just waits to get us started and things going.  Again we have a new year in front of us and the expectations for a good and prosperous one are high, as always...

I had two goals, which I also achieved during 2014.  Della got a clean run in Class 2 in agility and I got her to retrieve the wooden dumbbell after two years of hard work.  It may seem that it's not much but for me it's been two marvellous victories that can't be measured by normal standards.  Someone has told me I'm crazy to put so much time and money into one dog.  Though I have really had my own doubts at times, the outcome has been worth every effort.  I just love my dog so much not to give her this chance.

I also have the luck to have great people around me.  They have supported me, believed in me and kicked me forward when I have needed it the most.  Without their amazing backup I had probably been doing something else than agility and obedience with Della today.  Thank you!  No names needed.  You're all forever in my heart.

For Taika and Pasi I have had high hopes in agility, but despite my wishes the last certificate for making Taika a Finnish agility champion is still missing.  Taika has competed well but the odds have not always been in Taika's favour during 2014.  The incident with the see-saw in Forssa has also made Taika a bit insecure at times and Pasi has got some problems to work with here during next year.  Taika has turned nine years, which means we're also caring for her health more and more.  The chase for her last certificate will continue next year but most important is that Taika stays in shape and that we have a dog that still loves doing agility and puts up with it.

Kuura is the challenge!  She's the dog every handler wishes for - or not...  Kuura is energetic, curious, keen on learning, fast and always boiling over.  In other words, patience is not Kuura's strongest qualification.  Kuura is like a wonderful puzzle with all the pieces still in a terrible mess.  When these pieces will fit into place there's no doubt Pasi will have a masterpiece to handle.  Kuura is just one of a kind.

Hyvää Uutta Vuotta 2015!

On aika sanoa hyvästit vuodelle 2014, tehdä yhteenveto ja aloittaa uusi luku elämässämme.  Sen sivut ovat vielä tyhjät, mutta otsikko "2015" odottaa, että asiat alkavat rullata.  Uusi vuosi on taas edessämme ja kuten aina, odotukset kaikesta hyvästä ja menestyksestä ovat korkealla.

Minulla oli kaksi tavoitetta vuodelle 2014 ja molemmat toteutuivat.  Della teki puhtaan radan agilityn kakkosluokassa ja sain hänet noutamaan puisen kapulan kahden vuoden kovan työn jälkeen.  Se ei vältämättä kuulosta ihmeelliseltä, mutta minulle ne ovat olleet kaksi mahtavaa voittoa joita ei voi mitata normaaleilla asteikoilla.  Joku on sanonut, että olen hullu koska olen laittanut niin paljon aikaa ja rahaa yhteen koiraan.  Vaikka välillä olen itsekin epäillyt lopputulosta on se ollut kaiken vaivan arvoinen.  Rakastan koiraani niin paljon, että halusin antaa sille tämän mahdollisuuden.

Olen myös onnekas sillä minulla on upeita ihmisiä ympärilläni.  He ovat tukeneet minua, uskoneet minuun ja potkineet minua eteenpäin kun olen sitä tarvinnut eniten.  Ilman heidän mahtavaa tukea olisin luultavasti tehnyt Dellan kanssa jotain muuta kuin agilityä ja tottelevaisuutta.  Kiitos!  Nimiä ei tarvita.  Olette ikuisesti sydämessäni.

Taikan ja Pasin suhteen minulla oli agilityssä suuret odotukset, mutta toiveistani huolimatta puuttuu Taikan viimeinen agilityn valion sertifikaatti edelleen.  Taika on kisannut hyvin, mutta tähdet eivät vain suosineet vuonna 2014.  Keinuonnettomuus Forssan kisoissa teki Taikasta myös hieman epävarman ja Pasilla on tässä haasteita ensi vuodeksi.  Taika on täyttänyt yhdeksän vuotta, minkä takia olemme myös tarkempia sen terveyden kanssa.  Sertifikaatin metsästys tulee jatkumaan ensi vuonna, mutta kaikkein tärkeintä on, että Taika pysyy hyvässä kunnossa ja rakastaa agilityä ja jaksaa tehdä sitä.

Kuura on haaste!  Se on jokaisen ohjaajan toivekoira - tai sitten ei...  Kuura on energinen, utelias, innokas oppimaan, nopea ja aina ylikierroksilla.  Toisin sanoen, kärsivällisyys ei ole Kuuran vahvin ominaisuus.  Kuura on kuin ihana palapeli, jonka kaikki palat ovat vain vielä täysin sekaisin.  Mutta, kun nämä palaset osuvat paikoilleen, Pasilla on todellinen huippukoira ohjattavanaan.  Kuura on vain aikamoinen!  

Summer memories / Kesämuistoja

Though I have lived in Finland for twenty years by now, I can still count the times I have visited Yyteri Beach on my one hand.  It's really a shame because Yyteri is a great place to visit.  It's famous for its beach, which is the longest one in the country with its six kilometers of fine smooth sand and unique dune area.

Yyteri also has a specialty, because it has got an area, which is meant for dogs and their owners.  The dog beach is about 500 meters long and in this area dogs are allowed to run free, jump into the water and swim.  Being a sheltie owner the water activities are not really in favour, but playing and fooling around in the sand got our girls going.

The days of November have been really dark.  We have hardly seen the sun and we're all longing for light and brighter days.  Fortunately we have the beautiful memories captured by the camera from last summer to look at.  They bring some relief while waiting for those summer days again.

Iloisia koiria rannalla elokuussa.

Vaikka olen asunut Suomessa kaksikymmentä vuotta, voin vieläkin laskea yhden käden sormilla ne kerrat jolloin olen käynyt Yyterin rannalla.  Se on todella harmi sillä Yyteri on upea paikka.  Se on kuuluisa hienosta hiekkarannastaan ja dyyneistään, joka on Suomen pisin, kuusi kilometriä.  

Yyterissä on myös erikoisuus, siellä on oma alue joka on tarkoitettu koirille ja heidän omistajilleen.  Koiraranta on noin 500 metriä pitkä ja siellä koirat saavat juosta vapaasti, hyppiä veteen ja uida.  Sheltin omistajana tiedän etteivät vesileikit ole oikein suosittuja, mutta leikkiminen ja hulluttelu hiekassa sai meidän tytöt vauhtiin.

Marraskuun päivät ovat olleet todella pimeitä.  Emme ole juuri nähneet aurinkoa ja me kaikki kaipaamme valoa ja valoisempia päiviä.  Onneksi meillä on viime kesän kauniit muistot tallennettuna kameralla.  Ne tuovat helpotusta odottaessamme noita kesäpäiviä jälleen.

Della made history / Della teki historiaa

You don't need to climb Mount Everest to make history.  History can be made by much smaller actions, like getting your dog to retrieve the obedience dumbbell and bring it back to you on command.  I know, it doesn't sound like something to be put in the history book, but if you train for two years to get it to work, I'd say it's quite an achievement.

Two years is what it's taken me to get Della to retrieve.  In November 2012 I contacted Kati Häkli at Kontaktikoirat in Pori, because I wanted to get professional help to get Della's self-confidence back.  I had a dog that got jammed when put under pressure, that is I had a dog that did not function in agility or when training obedience.  As most of my blog readers already know, Della has suffered from a variety of different sad experiences, which turned a curious and forward sheltie into a cautious and insecure individual.  It's very important to mention that though Della did not work freely around other dogs, she loved to train and did it very well alone or among familiar dogs.

Our first lessons at Kontaktikoirat were nothing but trying to get Della used to other dogs and to get her to understand that all big, especially black, dogs don't threaten or attack her.  When Della was off the leash in class she was behind the classroom door with the tail between her legs, when she was on the leash Della hid under my chair.  I usually got to do other exercises than obedience.  Our goal was to get a dog that was relaxed and that relied on me though there were new things popping up around her.  Della was to stay focused whatever happened around her.

Della's classmates changed as time went by.  They got ahead while Della and I struggled with exercises that varied due to Della's reactions and attitude for the day.  Staying in place usually meant that Della stayed but her style was like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, that is she swayed from side to side being put between to big black dogs.  The weeks went by and Della confided more and more in me, her well-behaved classmates and the place.  The swaying stopped and Della got ears and tail again.  Those parts of Della's body had been hidden for a long time.  Inch by inch I got my dog back.

The battle with the dumbbell has really been one of a kind!  At first Della didn't even look at it, at home she left the room when she saw it in my hand.  Della showed quite clearly what was her point of view concerning retrieving on command.  So we started with the small wooden stick from an ice cream.  The thought was that a light stick like that wouldn't cause any severe pressure.  Moving on to a bigger stick was not an easy process, because Della refused to even open her mouth when I offered her the new dumbbell.  What to do now?  It should still create a pleasant feeling for Della retrieving the stick without pressure.  Della likes doing tricks so we decided to give playing a chance.  I grabbed the scissors and cut the tail of one of Della's favourite toys and put the stick into it.  Della didn't hesitate at all to retrieve the furrier version of a dumbbell.  When I got this to work I eventually cut off and shortened the furry tail part that covered the stick so Della got used to also having the wooden surface in her mouth.  I have no idea how much time I've spent on just doing this, but we're speaking of many months.  Not only once I've also been ready to quit...  

It's been a very special journey but taking a look at Della and what she's doing today, I'd say it's been worth it.  Check it out on youtube, where my patient coach Kati put her video from last Monday.  The text that comes up first tells you that it's taken two years to get Della to retrieve and that it is the absolute record for the school of Kontaktikoirat.  I think it will be a record hard to break...

I am more than grateful for all the help and marvellous support I've got from my outstanding coach Kati, who never gave up on us and always had an extra ace up her sleeve when I felt we had tried everything.  Two very special thanks also go to Elina and Marianne and their lovely dogs Oizzy and Rontti.  You made Della understand that big and black not always rhyme with bad and dangerous.  And, to all of our wonderful classmates during these years.  Without you this would not have been possible.  With your help I didn't need to climb Mount Everest, I moved the whole mountain!

Ei tarvitse kiivetä Mount Everestille tehdäkseen historiaa.  Historiaa voi tehdä paljon pienemmillä teoilla, kuten saada koirasi suorittamaan toko:n noutoliikkeen.  Tiedän, ettei se kuulosta joltain mitä kirjoitettaisiin historian kirjoihin, mutta jos olet harjoitellut asiaa kaksi vuotta saadaksesi sen toimimaan, on se melkoinen saavutus.

Minulta kuului kaksi vuotta saada Della noutamaan kapulan.  Marraskuussa 2012 otin yhteyttä Kati Häkliin Kontaktikoiriin Porissa, koska halusin ammattiapua palauttaakseni Dellan itseluottamuksen.  Minulla oli koira joka jähmettyi paineen alla, eli minulla oli koira joki ei toiminut agilityssä tai tottelevaisuudessa.  Kuten monet jotka seuraavat blogiani jo tietävät, Della on kokenut erilaisia ikäviä kokemuksia mitkä olivat muuttaneet uteliaan ja ulospäin suuntautuneen sheltin varovaiseksi ja epävarmaksi yksilöksi.  On kuitenkin tärkeää mainita, että Della toimi hyvin ja rakasti harjoittelemista yksin tai tuttujen koirien ympäröimänä.

Ensimmäiset tunnit Kontaktikoirilla olivat ainoastaan Dellan totuttamista muihin koiriin ja saada hänet ymmärtämään, ettei kaikki suuret, erityisesti mustat, koirat olleet uhka tai halunneet hyökätä kimppuun.  Dellan ollessa vapaana luokassa se oli ulko-oven takana häntä koipien välissä, kytkettynä piilossa tuolini alla.  Sain yleensä tehdä muita kuin tottelevaisuusharjoituksia.  Tavoite oli saada koira rentoutumaan ja luottamaan minuun vaikka ympärillä tapahtui uusia asioita.  Dellan piti pysyä keskittyneenä mitä ikinä tapahtuikin ympärillä.

Dellan luokkakaverit vaihtuivat ajan kuluessa.  Ne etenivät taidoissa Dellan kamppailessa erilaisten harjoitusten kanssa päivän reaktiosta ja asenteesta riippuen.  Paikallaolossa Della yleensä pysyi vaikka se oli kuin puolelta toiselle kallisteleva Pisan torni kahden mustan koiran välissä.  Viikot kuluivat ja Dellan luottamus minuun, hyvin käyttäytyviin luokkakavereihin ja paikkaan kasvoi koko ajan.  Horjuminen loppui ja korvat ja häntä tulivat taas näkyviin.  Nuo osat olivat yleensä piilossa jossain Dellan kropassa.  Sain koiraani takaisin pala palalta.

Taistelu noutokapulan kanssa oli oma luku sinänsä!  Alussa Della ei edes suostunut katsomaan kapulaa, kotona se poistui huoneesta nähdessään kapulan minun kädessäni.  Della näytti melkoisen selvästi mielipiteensä noutoliikkeestä.  Joten aloitimme harjoittelun jäätelöpuikon puisen tikun kanssa.  Ajatuksena oli ettei pieni kevyt puinen tikku aiheuttaisi pahoja paineita.  Vaihtaminen isompaan kapulaan ei ollut helppo, sillä Della kieltäytyi avaamasta suutaan kun tarjosin sille uutta kapulaa.  Mitä tehdä?  Minun piti saada Della pitämään kapulasta ja noudosta ilman paineita.  Della pitää tempuista joten päätimme kokeilla leikkiä.  Tartuin saksiin ja leikkelin Dellan yhdestä lempilelusta hännän ja pujotin sen noutokapulan ympärille.  Della ei epäröinyt noutaa karvaista noutokapulaa.  Kun tämä toimi pienensin karvaista palaa hiljalleen jolloin Della tottui puisen kapulaan.  Minulla ei ole aavistustakaan miten paljon aikaa tähän kuului, mutta varmasti kuukausia.  Ja, ainakin useammin kuin kerran olin valmis luovuttamaan...

Playmate of the Month

At the moment we have an almost nude sheltie girl at home and if there had been a certain Playdog paper on the market for males, I think Kuura had been the perfect calender bitch of November.  She's beautiful and athletic and she's got a body that really shows without that normal furry coat...

Joking apart, besides being bare Kuura is also somewhere in the middle of a puberty crisis.  Things and persons that have been familiar and loving before have suddenly turned into scary and dangerous objects.  Stones and bushes along the ordinary dirt road are no more friendly in Kuura's eyes.  No, they are all ready to attack every time we're passing by, especially now when it's getting quite dark already in the afternoon.  Kuura barks and growls at the spooky silhouettes and sees to that there is enough space between her and her imaginary monsters before passing them.  That's our lovely Lady Grey!

Meillä on juuri nyt kotona melkein alaston sheltti tyttö ja jos olisi olemassa tietty Playdog-lehti uroksille, Kuura olisi mielestäni täydellinen marraskuun kalenterinarttu.  Hän on kaunis ja sporttinen ja hänellä on kroppa, joka nyt on todella tullut esiin ilman sitä normaalia pörröistä turkkia...

Leikki sikseen, paitsi että Kuura on miltei karvaton, sillä on myös jonkin asteinen murrosikä.  Asiat ja ihmiset jotka aikaisemmin ovat olleet tuttuja ja rakkaita ovat yhtäkkiä muuttuneet pelottaviksi ja vaarallisiksi.  Kivet ja pensaat tutun soratien varrella eivät ole Kuuran silmissä enää ystävällisiä.  Ne ovat kaikki valmiit hyökkäämään joka kerta kun kävelemme ohi, erityisesti nyt kun iltapäivätkin ovat aika pimeitä.  Kuura haukkuu ja murisee aavemaisille varjokuville ja varmistaa, että on riittävästi välimatkaa hänen ja mielikuvitteellisten hirviöiden välissä.  Se on meidän ihana Leidi Harmaa!

Meeting Didi / Didin tapaaminen

We've got to meet with "the new girl in town", adorable Didi.  Didi is a three-month-old German Pinscher bitch with a lovely character.  She took our hearts by storm with one exception and this time I am not talking about my smiling darling Della.  We found out that we've got another Mona Lisa in the family too and she goes by the name of Kuura!  What a surprise!  When Della showed good manners Kuura showed Didi her beautiful teeth.  Fortunately Didi did not take any further notice about Kuura's smile and just continued to explore the world around her.

Didi's arrival is such a wonderful thing, because her owner Jaana has waited so long for having a puppy like her.  Now we're looking forward to follow how Didi grows and develops.  We hope that Didi is going to be keen on agility too, because it means we will have very nice travel company on our future competition trips.

Didi, odotettu ystävä.

Olemme tavanneet "the new girl in town", ihastuttavan Didin.  Didi on kolme kuukautta vanha pinseri narttu jolla on ihana luonne.  Hän valloitti meidän kaikkien sydämet poikkeuksena yksi enkä tällä kertaa tarkoita minun hymyilevää kullannuppua Dellaa.  Huomasimme, että meidän talossa on toinenkin Mona Lisa, nimeltään Kuura!  Mikä yllätys!  Kun Della näytti hyvät tapansa, Kuura näytti kauniit hampaansa.  Onneksi Didi ei Kuuran hymystä paljon välittänyt ja jatkoi vain ympäröivän maailman tutkimista.

Didin saapuminen on todella hieno asia, koska Jaana, hänen omistajansa, on odottanut Didin kaltaista pentua kauan.  Nyt odotamme innolla Didin kasvua ja kehitystä.  Toivomme Didin innostuvan myös agilityyn ja silloin saamme todella mukavaa matkaseuraa myös tulevaisuudessa kisamatkoihin.

...or how much stuffing does a small soft toy ball really contain?  The answer is - a lot!

A few weeks ago Kuura was obviously of the strong opinion that we needed to clean the house though it wasn't our regular cleaning day.  Usually we put our dogs to work by training but sometimes it can be like this too.  The dog sees to keep its owner busy...

Considering all that overwhelming energy that never seems to really come to an end, Kuura is very well-behaved when it comes to her habits while being left home alone.  What could have meant demolished pieces of furniture, torn carpets and wallpapers have fortunately stopped at eaten shoestrings, shoe soles and a pair of really restyled rubber slippers.  A few leashes and Della's retrieving stick have also seen better days...

Though Kuura can be such an imp sometimes you just have to forgive her.  Pups and young dogs are more or less rascals at times, but what's most important to remember - for a tasted shoestring you receive a hundredfold good things in return such as good health and well-being due to daily walks, a rich social life and good friends, a lot of fun and happy laughter.  Things you just can't get for money!

...tai miten paljon pieni lelupallo oikeastaan sisältää täytettä?  Vastaus - paljon!

Muutama viikko sitten Kuura oli ilmeisesti vahvasti sitä mieltä, että olisi aikaa siivota talo vaikkei vielä ollutkaan normaali siivouspäivä.  Yleensä pistämme koirat töihin harjoituksissa, mutta voi se olla joskus näinkin.  Koira pitää omistajan kiireisenä...

Ollaakseen ylitse pursuavan aktiivinen koira jolta ei energia tunnu loppuvan, on Kuura tavoiltaan erittäin hyvin käyttäytyvä koira jäädessään yksin kotiin.  Ajatellen, että voisi olla syödyt huonekalut, revityt matot ja tapetit on tulos ollut vain syödyt kengännauhat, pohjalliset ja pari todella muotoiltuja crocsin jäljitelmiä.  Muutama hihna ja Dellan noutokapula ovat myös paremmat päivänsä jo nähneet...

Vaikka Kuura on välillä oikea paholainen ei sille voi olla antamatta anteeksi.  Pennut ja nuoret koirat ovat jossain vaiheessa villejä, mutta on tärkeintä muistaa, että parista syödyistä kengännauhasista saa takaisin satakertaa enemmän hyviä asioita kuten fyysistä ja henkistä hyvinvointia päivittäisestä liikunnasta, laajan tuttavanpiirin ja hyviä ystäviä, hauskanpitoa ja hyviä nauruja.  Asioita joita et voi ostaa!

11.-12.10. WeCA, Noormarkku

Again a weekend filled with the greatest of sports - agility!  Taika had three competitions on Saturday and Della two on Sunday.  Our team's personal stakes were quite high, because I dreamed of Taika getting her last certificate for becoming a Finnish Agility Champion.  The Jumping Champion's title she's already got.  For Della I hoped for a last clean run that would move us from Class 2 till Class 3, the highest class in agility.  But, as we all know, things do not always turn out as we wish them to...

The competitions were very well organized by West Coast Agility Team ry (WeCA) and it was great to meet with friends from different parts of Western Finland, to enjoy classy handling and eager dogs.  Pasi and Taika entered the courses of judge Hilpi Yli-Jaskari, who was a brand-new acquaintance and Pasi liked her tracks a lot.  They had good flow. 

Taika's day started with a jumping competition, which almost became a real hit if Pasi hadn't tried some new handling on the third obstacle from the end.  If you have a clean run coming, never try new things!  It just won't pay off!  A great performance ended up in a very unnecessary disqualification and Pasi got to hear it too - not only from me!  Their second competition was almost perfect.  All the contacts were clean, which really isn't every day's matter of course speaking of Taika!  Unfortunately Taika got one obstacle stick down and was punished with 5 faults.  This was really very annoying, because Taika's agility champion title vanished at the same time the stick was knocked down.  Now they came in 6th having the third fastest time.  But, there's always an if...  Their last track ended up in a disqualification after a bad start.  Taika did not wait in the start and rushed through the first obstacle tearing the stick down.  She entered the dogwalk, got a contact fault and after that the whole package just came apart.  The good thing though is that Taika worked normally on the track.  There were no signs of trauma after the see-saw incident in Forssa.

On Sunday Della had two competitions on the agenda.  Class 2 was judged by Timo Teiler and of experience I knew I had to really work to get a clean run from his tracks.  Timo's ideal times are tight and his courses demand technique, they are not straightforward and speedy.  I am really sorry about our first competition, which ended up in a really annoying disqualification due to my stupidity.  I know we are still struggling with problems while entering the weave poles and I should have helped my dog a lot more, but when Della went so well I became a bit too hilarious and my handling was altogether too careless.  My package burst after that...

The second competition went much better.  The course was as demanding as the first one but Della worked really well.  I lost some time at the weave poles where Della started off nicely but at the end I had to support her when her rhythm failed a bit.  All contacts were absolutely perfect though the see-saw performance was a bit slow, probably due to me being too close to my dog and therefore causing an odd situation for a dog that usually loves the see-saw!  Just before the finish line I got a too wide turn, which took valuable time and I lost our possibility to achieve the last certificate for moving on to Class 3.  That's agility!  I had a really good clean run and it felt great, Della was wonderful but still we need to practice.  A bit more daring from my side would be preferable.  I don't think it should be a problem, because I know I can count on Della more and more all the time now.  We came in second with a slight overtime but without faults and if I compare these two competitions to what I experienced back in January, when Della didn't do anything but avoiding the obstacles...  I think I can say my efforts and work with Della have paid off quite well.  Still there is work to be done, but in a way I think we're back in business again!

Ihana hetki ja täydellinen palkinto,

trikkivärinen hihna.

Viikonloppu oli taas täynnä hienoa urheilua - agilitya!  Taikalla oli lauantaina kolme starttia ja Dellalla sunnuntaina kaksi.  Teamin henkilökohtaiset panokset olivat korkealla, unelmissani oli, että Taika saisi viimeisen sertin ja Suomen Agilityvaliotittelin.  Taikalla on jo Hyppyvaliotitteli.  Dellalle toivoin viimeistä nollarataa ja siirto 2-luokasta agilityn korkeimpaan 3-luokkaan.  Niin kuin kaikki tietävät, aina ei käy niin kuin toivoo...  

WeCA oli järjestänyt taas hienot kisat ja oli ihanaa tavata taas ystäviä ympäri Länsi-Suomea ja nauttia taitavista ohjauksista ja innokkaista koirista.  Pasi ja Taika saivat tutustua heille uuden tuomarin Hilpi Yli-Jaskarin ratoihin joista Pasi piti kovasti.  Niillä oli hyvä vauhti.

Taika aloitti päivän hyppyradalla, josta miltei tuli täysi osuma jollei Pasi olisi kokeillut uutta ohjausta kolmanneksi viimeisellä esteellä.  Jos sinulla on tulossa puhdas ratasuoritus, älä koskaan kokeile mitään uutta!  Se ei kannata!  Hieno suoritus päättyi turhaan hylkäykseen ja Pasi sai siitä myös kuulla - eikä vain minulta!  Toinen rata oli miltei täydellinen suoritus.  Kaikki kontaktit onnistuivat, mikä ei todellakaan ole joka päiväistä kun kyse on Taikasta!  Valitettavasti yksi rima tuli alas ja siitä 5 virhepistettä.  Tuo oli todella ärsyttävää, sillä tuohon riman pudotukseen katosi agilityvalion mahdollisuus tällä kertaa.  Saavutuksena 6. sija ja radan kolmanneksi nopein aika.  Mutta, siinä on aina se jos...  Kolmas kisa päättyi hylkyyn huonon lähdön takia.  Taika ei tapansa mukaan odottanut startissa vaan ryntäsi läpi ensimmäisen esteen pudottaen riman.  Puomin alastulolta kontaktivirhe ja siihen koko paketti hajosi.  Hieno oli, että Taika toimi kuitenkin radalla normaalisti.  Ei ollut merkkiäkään traumasta Forssan keinuonnettomuuden jälkeen.

Sunnuntaina Dellalla oli kaksi kisaa.  Kakkosluokan tuomari oli Timo Teiler ja kokemuksista tiesin, että radoilla täytyy tehdä töitä jos aikoo saada nollasuorituksen.  Timon ihanneajat ovat tiukkoja ja hänen radat teknisiä eivätkä vain suoraviivaisia juoksuratoja.  Olen todella harmissani meidän ensimmäisestä radasta joka päättyi omaan tyhmyyteni takia ärsyttävään hylkäykseen.  Tiedän, että kamppailemme vielä pujottelun sisäänmenon kanssa ja minun olisi pitänyt auttaa koiraani paljon enemmän, mutta kun Della kulki niin hienosti tulin liian iloiseksi ja huolimattomaksi ohjauksessani jonka jälkeen paketti levisi...

Toinen kisa meni paljon paremmin.  Rata oli yhtä vaativa kuin ensimmäinen, mutta Della toimi todella hyvin.  Menetin hieman aikaa pujottelussa jotka Della aloitti vauhdikkaasti, mutta lopussa jouduin kannustamaan jolloin rytmi sekosi hieman.  Kaikki kontaktit olivat aivan täydellisiä, vaikka keinu oli hieman hidas, varmaankin siksi, että olin liian lähellä koiraani ja aiheutin oudun tilanteen koiralleni joka yleensä pitää keinusta!  Juuri ennen maaliviivaa tein liian ison kaarroksen mikä vei arvokasta aikaa ja menetimme mahdollisuutemme saada sertin ja siirtyä kolmosluokkaan.  Tällaista on agility!  Meillä oli hieno puhdas rata ja hyvä tunne, Della oli loistava, mutta meidän pitää vielä harjoitella.  Hiukan rohkeampaa toimintaa minulta olisi suotavaa.  En usko sen olevan ongelma, koska tiedän voivani luottaa Dellaan koko ajan enemmän.  Sijoituimme toiseksi pienellä yliajalla, mutta ilman virheitä ja jos vertaan näitä kahta kisaa siihen mitä koin viime tammikuussa jolloin Della vältteli kaikkia esteitä...  Voin sanoa, että uhraukset ja työ Dellan kanssa on tuottanut hyvin tulosta.  Vielä on töitä tehtävänä, mutta olemme mielestäni taas takaisin kisassa!

08.10. Happy Birthday, Kuura!

A year ago Mila (High-Glade's Honey Melody) gave birth to five lovely puppies, four males and a bitch.  We were expecting a bitch but when we heard that Mila got only one our hopes were dashed.  We were almost sure that the breeder, Eeva, would like to keep it for herself.  When Eeva got back to us and asked if we were interested in having a blue merle coloured bitch, we didn't hesitate for a second and I bought Kuura for Pasi.

And, what a package he's got!  Filled with endless energy, speed and beauty, curiosity and lots of the wonderful kind of love that only a dog can offer...  That's our madcap, Länsimetsän Kuurankukka, in a nutshell.  No dull moments, just a hunger for doing things and exploring the world.  I've said it before, our Kuura is like a little border collie in a sheltie cover though it still feels like the brains are missing sometimes...  If nothing happens Kuura makes things happen!  Kuura is so rash at times that I really thank our lucky star for having a dog with four legs that are still intact.

Happy Birthday to our precious and very special Kuura and her lovely brothers Aarre, Nova, Piki and Soni!  You are all such treasures!  Thank you, Eeva, for letting us having her!  Kuura has turned our lives into a marvellous adventure, an exciting journey we hope will last for many years yet.

Äiti ja tytär, Mila ja Kuura.

Vuosi sitten Mila (High-Glade's Honey Melody) synnytti viisi ihanaa pentua, neljä urosta ja yhden nartun.  Olimme odottaneet narttua, mutta kun kuulimme, että Mila sai vain yhden nartun meidän toiveemme murskantui.  Olimme varmoja, että kasvattaja, Eeva, halusi pitää sen itsellään.  Kun Eeva kysyi sitten meiltä olemmeko kiinnostuneita ottamaan blue merle pennun, emme epäröineet hetkeäkään ja ostin Kuuran Pasille.

Ja, minkä paketin hän saikaan!  Täynnä loputonta energiaa, vauhtia ja kauneutta, uteliasuutta ja paljon sellaista rakkautta mitä vain koira voi tarjota...  Pähkinäkuoressa, se on meidän rämäpää, Länsimetsän Kuurankukka,  Ei tylsiä hetkiä, vain halu tehdä asioita ja tutkia maailmaa.  Olen sanonut aikaisemminkin, että meidän Kuura on kuin pieni bordercollie shelttipakkauksessa vaikka välillä tuntuu, että aivot puuttuu...  Jos mitään ei tapahdu, Kuura järjestää tapahtumia!  Kuura on niin uhkarohkea, että olemme todella onnekkaita, että meillä on vielä koira neljällä ehjällä tassulla.

Onnittelut rakkaalle ja todella erityiselle Kuuralle ja hänen veljille Aarre, Nova, Piki ja Soni!  Te olette kaikki niin kullan kalliita!  Kiitos, Eeva, että saimme hänet!  Kuura on tehnyt elämästämme uskomattoman seikkailun, matkan jonka toivomme kestävän vielä monia vuosia.

New outfits / Uudet varusteet

Kuura is an active dog.  She wants to participate and there are no limits, everything goes.  She's curious and is always checking things out.  When I am cleaning the house Kuura follows me from room to room, outdoors she's usually taking part in all the garden exercises and if we're not digging somewhere, Kuura is...  Kuura also likes to sit on the stairs in front of our house looking out for visitors or cats.  Cats have no business coming to our garden if Kuura is out.  Kuura is quite alert and if someone of our neighbours' cats should show up in our garden by mistake, Kuura makes sure the visit is going to be a short one with a very quick exit.

Kuura wants to be involved in things and if she's being left out when Pasi is for instance training with Taika, Kuura invents own activities.  One of her favourites is eating her leash!  It's not possible to bind her to a tree, because she knows how to use her teeth...  It doesn't take many minutes and Kuura has cut what is keeping her tied up.  Therefore we nowadays put Kuura in the cage while training our other dogs.  Of course, we have a cage made of metal for our little Houdini...

When we got Kuura from Eeva, the breeder, Kuura's father's owner had bought leashes as gifts for all the puppies.  The boys got light blue leashes and the only girl in the litter, Kuura, got a pink one.  When Kuura decided to pimp her leash a few months ago she did it so thoroughly, that Pasi had ten pieces of leash instead of one.

Pasi was quite sad having lost his best leash so I promised to get him a new one.  We knew who had made the leash and I put an email to Tanja Nummelin in Luvia.  Tanja is a very talented young woman, who is making the leashes by hand.  I just love them.  The leashes are so well-made and the colouring is possible to order by your own choice.  Therefore I decided to order leashes for Taika and Della as well and in their colours too, that is a blue leash for Taika and a three-coloured for Della.  Kuura's leash was going to be pink, of course.

Thank you, Tanja!  The leashes are just great!  We like!

I also have to mention that I have bought a toweling dog coat for Kuura last summer.  It's been very useful during the many weeks of really hot weather.  I bought it from HelsiTar during the AgiRotu-event.  Helsitar and Team Hurrila have got a quite nice history together, beacause it was by HelsiTar together with MainosOmmel we got our team's logotype developed and realized a few years ago.

Uudet hihnat ja meidän nätti harmaa pinkissä.

Kuura on aktiivinen koira.  Se haluaa osallistua kaikkeen, sillä ei ole rajoja.  Kuura on utelias ja se on aina tutkimassa asioita.  Kun olen siivoamassa Kuura seuraa minua huoneesta toiseen, ulkohommissa sama asia.  Jos emme ole kaivamassa jossain, Kuura on...  Kuura pitää myös vahtikoiran roolista, se istuu mielellään etuoven edessä portailla katsomassa onko vieraita tai kissoja liikkeellä.  Kissoilla ei ole asiaa meidän tontille kun Kuura on pihalla.  Kuura on aika valpas ja jos joku naapurimme kissoista tulisi vahingossa pihallemme, Kuura näyttää sille äkkiä nopeimman tien ulos.

Kuura haluaa olla mukana kun tapahtuu ja jos se on esimerkiksi jätetty johonkin odottamaan kun Pasi treenaa Taikan kanssa, Kuura keksii omia aktiviteettejä.  Yksi Kuuran suosikeista on oman hihnan syöminen!  Sen laittaminen kiinni puuhun ei ole mahdollista, koska Kuura tietää miten käyttää hampaitaan...  Ei vie montaa minuuttia kun Kuura on katkaissut sen mikä pitää hänet kiinni.  Nykyään kun treenaamme Dellan ja Taikan kanssa laitamme Kuuran häkkiin.  Häkki on tietysti tehty metallista meidän pienelle Huodinille...

Kun haimme Kuuran Eevalta, kasvattajalta, saimme hihnan Kuuran isän omistajalta.  Hän oli lahjoittanut hihnat kaikille pennuille, vaalean siniset pojille ja ainoalle tytölle, Kuuralle, vaalean punaisen.  Kun Kuura päätti pari kuukautta sitten, että se tuunaa hihnansa, teki se sen niin perusteellisesti, että hihnasta oli kymmenessä osassa.

Pasi suri kun Kuuran paras hihna oli poissa ja lupasin järjestää hänelle uuden.  Tiesin kuka oli tehnyt sen ja laitoin sähköpostia Tanja Nummelinille Luvialta.  Tanja on todella taitava nuori nainen, joka tekee hihnat käsityönä.  Minä rakastan niitä.  Hihnat ovat niin hyvin tehtyjä ja ne on myös mahdollista tilata oman värivalinnan mukaan.  Sen takia päätin tilata hihnat myös Taikalle ja Dellalle niiden omilla väreillä eli sininen hihna Taikalle ja trikkivärinen Dellalle.  Kuuran hihna oli tietysti vaalean punainen.

Kiitos Tanja!  Hihnat ovat upeat.  Tykkäämme!

Täytyy myös kertoa, että olen tänä kesänä ostanut märkäloimen Kuuralle.  Siitä on ollut kovasti hyötyä kesän kuumimpana aikana.  Ostin sen HelsiTarilta AgiRodussa.  HelsiTarilla ja Team Hurrilalla on hieno yhteinen tarina, koska HelsiTar yhdessä MainosOmpeleen kanssa auttoi meitä oman logon luomisessa ja toteuttamisessa pari vuotta sitten.

21.09. Non-official Obedience Trial / TOKO-epiksissä

Last Sunday Della and I took part in a non-official obedience trial arranged by the Western Division of the Finnish Shetland Sheepdog Association.  The trial was held at our club in Harjavalta and we were lucky to probably enjoy one of the last really warm days of the season.

My last memory of a trial in obedience is having a dog that leaves the court because it can't stand the too harsh voice of the judge.  Since then I have worked with Della hoping for being able to compete with her in obedience some time in the future again.  Attending a non-official obedience trial is a great opportunity to test your and your dog's skills before entering an official trial.

We also had the pleasure to meet with Marianne and Rontti.  They had come for the trial too.  Rontti is a lovely black mixed breed "teddy bear", which has been one of Della's so called "therapy friends" at Kontaktikoirat in Pori.  Rontti has helped Della to get back some of the self-confidence Della lost after having been attacked twice by a big black dog during training agility a few years ago.  The dog was kind but young and very playful and the incidents have had a very sad impact on Della.  With Rontti's help Della has learned to put up better with being close to big black dogs, but it's taken time and it still needs continued work.

To share the podium with the team, which had scored the best points for the day (184 points), Marianne and Rontti, felt more than great.  Marianne also knows very well how Della has behaved the first times we trained together, my dog with its tail between its legs.  Last Sunday Della noticed Marianne and went straight towards her with wagging tail...  It really makes me hope for the future!

The trial went very well and we scored 173,5 points out of 200 so I am more than pleased.  Della had fun, I had fun and it got even funnier when I heard that we had come in third.  The judge, Maarit Järvinen, judged us as follows:

Now I have to work on the improvements, that is getting Della even closer to me when she's on and off the leash, see to that Della comes in a more straight position to the side at recall (Della usually does...) and, last but not least, being a good handler to my dog and remember to tell her the orders that should be told...  It usually helps!  Perhaps it's a good thing to attend trials more often so I won't forget what to say or do...

Viime sunnuntaina osallistuimme Dellan kanssa Lännen Sheltit ry:n järjestämään epäviralliseen toko-kokeeseen.  Koe pidettiin seuramme kentällä Harjavallassa ja saimme varmaankin nauttia kesän viimeisestä lämpimästä päivästä.

Viimeinen toko-koemuistoni on kun koirani lähti kentältä ahdistuttuaan tuomarin liian kovasta äänestä.  Tuon jälkeen olemme tehneet töitä Dellan kanssa toivoen, että joskus tulevaisuudessa voisimme vielä kisata tokossa.  Osallistumalla epäviralliseen kokeeseen saa oivan mahdollisuuden testata sekä oman että koiran kykyjä ennen osallistumista viralliseen kokeeseen.

Oli myös kiva tavata Mariannen ja Rontin.  Hekin olivat tulleet kokeeseen.  Rontti on ihana musta x-rotuinen "nalle karhu", joka on ollut yksi Dellan niin sanotuista "terapiakavereista" Kontaktikoirilla Porissa.  Rontti on auttanut Dellaa saaman takaisin osan itseluottamustaan sen jälkeen kun sen kimppuun hyökkäsi kaksi kertaa iso musta koira agilityharjoituksissa muutama vuosi sitten.  Koira oli kiltti, mutta nuori ja leikkisä ja tapauksista jäi Dellalle todella huonot kokemukset.  Rontin avulla Della on oppinut kestämään paremmin isoja mustia koiria vierellään, mutta se on vienyt aikaa ja vaati edelleen jatkuvaa työtä.

Tuntui todella hienolta olla palkintopallilla Mariannen ja Rontin kanssa, jotka tekivät päivän korkeimmat pisteet (184 pistettä).  Marianne tietää myös todella hyvin miten Della käyttäytyi ensimmäisissä yhteisissä treeneissä, häntä koipien välissä...  Viime sunnuntaina Dellan nähdessä Mariannen se meni heti häneen luokseen häntä heiluen...  Se todella antaa toivoa tulevaisuuteen!

Koe meni todella hyvin ja saimme 173,5 pistettä 200:sta, joten olen enemmän kuin tyytyväinen.  Dellalla oli hauskaa, minulla oli hauskaa ja vielä hauskempaa oli kun kuulin, että olimme sijoittuneet kolmanneksi.  Tuomari Maarit Järvinen antoi seuraavat pisteet:

Nyt minun täytyy tehdä töitä parantaakseni muutamia asioita, saada Della kulkemaan lähempänä minua seuraamisissa, saada luoksetulo sivulle suoremmaksi (Della yleensä tulee...) ja vielä muista antaa käskyt koiralleni niin kuin pitäisi...  Se yleensä auttaa paljon!  Ehkä olisi hyvä osallistua useammin toko-kokeisiin, jotten unohtaisi mitä sanoa ja tehdä...
